Effective school leadership for the digital, global era
Schools MUST have effective leaders that can facilitate their transformation from an industrial-age orientation. Unfortunately, the people in charge of leading schools into the 21st century often are the least knowledgeable about the 21st century. What does effective leadership of digital, global learning organizations look like? The answer to this question is critical for the future of schools because if the leaders don't get it, it's not going to happen.

Why Has Technology Affected So Little Change on Teaching and Learning?
Despite the millions (billions?) of dollars spent on instructional technology over the past decade, most classrooms look and work very much the same as they did 50 years ago. Why? What did we do wrong? What can we do to make it right?

SMART Boards Interactive Whiteboards: Technology Strategies and Ideas We Can Use Right Now!
Interactive whiteboard themselves are a hot topic and it is no secrete that SMART Boards are one of the hottest. The concurrent session for this topic and other interactive whiteboards are always popular and near standing room only. Why not give these presenters, who are extremely knowledgeable in interactive whiteboard any other technologies the space they deserve. Motivational and published speakers are great, but it is time for “ready-now” in the classroom ideas to be presented. Let us have a Keynote Speaker who can have us leave with ideas that can be implemented immediately in the classroom a school systems…

Standing on the shoulders of giants
Educational computing used to be rooted in powerful ideas about learning and traditions of progressive education. Isn't it high-time that the ISTE conference situates edtech in a larger context of powerful ideas, social justice and progress?
NECC has featured lots of schtick for keynotes, but never a Charlie-Rose or Meet the Press-style keynote with smart folks having a serious discussion.
It's also worth noting that Seymour Papert, the father of the field, never keynoted NECC.

How Do We Assess Learning in the 21st Century?
The K12 edition of the 2009 Horizon Report states that assessment and filtering are the two issues greatly impacting the degree at which technologies are adopted in classrooms. In terms of addressing need, I would like for a keynote speaker to talk about the challenge of assessment in technology rich environments. To include examples of how data can be collected and used to impact instruction in real time (through sms and online tools), and how teachers and admins can redesign formative and summative assessments to assess learning and literacies using 21st Century tools. It would be great if the session…

Accessible Instructional Materials
As states and districts increasingly move toward the use of digital instructional materials, it is critically important that those acquiring materials understand and require that accessibility features be designed into those materials. The use accessible materials and inclusive technology can do much to ensure that ALL students have the opportunity for full educational participipation and achievement.
