Struggling Readers and the Brain
In the last few years, neuroscientists have begun to unravel the enigma surrounding struggling readers: why they continue to struggle despite appropriate curriculum and excellent interventions. The answers are in the way the brain organizes. For some students, attention, processing speed and working memory skills lag behind other skills and interfere with academic achievement in many areas.

ELL's - What types of language education programs work, based on scientific research?
ELL students—the nation’s fastest growing K-12 population—are challenged to learn both the English language and academic content at grade level simultaneously. Who are the ELLs in our schools? (The vast majority are born in the U.S., are U.S. citizens, and begin school in kindergarten and first grade with their monolingual English-speaking peers.) What types of language education programs work, based on scientific research? What funding and resource opportunities exist? What can schools do to close the achievement gap and raise the graduation rate among ELL students?

How the Brain Learns:The Intersection of Science and Education
Over the last 30 years, neuroscience research has led to a better understanding of the processes involved in effective reading and learning. How can we use these findings to boost brain processing efficiency and accelerate learning to help all students reach their academic potential?

Digital Footprint
Carl Fisch mentioned at the TIE Conference last summer that students and their teachers need to be aware of the digital footprint that they are leaving behind as their web presence increases. How can an instructor/facilitator help "digital natives" create a reliable system of checks and balances that reach beyond yearly classroom expectations, potentially outdated district guidelines, and/or transient peer influences?

Best practices for integrating technology into classrooms on a school-wide or district-wide level
What is the best way, really, to integrate technology in our students' curriculum? Hold teachers accountable for using technology in their assignments at the administrative level? A district-wide mandate? Or requiring students to take computer classes as a part of their matriculation? What works? What is ideal? What processes or steps should a technology coordinator engage in to see that learning with technology happens for students throughout the whole school or district? I am looking for a speaker to offer suggestions for best practices or proven models of technology use/technology integration SCHOOL or DISTRICT-wide (we need more than what works… more

The body is the message: Towards post-cognitive, embodied educational technology
The proposals thus far are looking for the magic bullet for effective technology in education: super principals, web 2.0, video games, etc. In the meantime none of us ever discuss our philosophy of technology, our philosophy of teaching, or what it really means to learn and understand (in school and elsewhere). In practice and implicitly, our philosophy of all three is behaviorist, out of date, and incorrect. This would be a theoretical talk/panel bringing the field up to date on what has been going on in philosophy, psychology, and computing in the past 20 years: including embodied cognition, phenomenology, enactive… more

Leading the Way with Digital Era Learning
Social networking technologies are transforming the very basis of how we think, and how our thinking impacts the knowledge and development of others. Yet, teacher education operates in a world of responsiveness...response to national reports, public opinion, content standards, professional standards, the media, and more. Let's flip that model on its head. Instead of reacting, educators, researchers, and policymakers can work together via social networks to proactively lead the way in transforming education in their own schools and institutions.

Each one, every one--providing a platform for student voice
Using technology tools to provide a platform for student voice. Marco Torres would be a fantastic choice to speak about reaching every student and providing opportunities for students to collaborate and communicate with a global audience. Embracing culture and connecting communities is essential for 21st century students!

Students vs. Leadership: The Great Debate
Let's combine the ideas of "leadership" and "student voice" with a debate! I envision a panel of students and a panel of administrators participating in a debate. The questions could cover many of the topics that currently sit at the top of our list. We could include all sorts of audience participation options, and truly make our keynote one-of-a-kind!
This idea would allow the needs of many to be met, while at the same time sparking all kinds of great discussions. I realize that this is not the typical keynote format, but it's ours to decide! If you are truly… more

Focusing on creativity in teaching and learning
ISTE & its members are all about effective teaching & learning. K. Cator, Yong Zhao or Ken Robinson, as examples, have key and important messages about the direction of learning in a global perspective. It is important for conference attendees to think in the largest possible terms. Technology, as we all understand, facilitates expressions of this creativity.

Promoting critical analysis in literacy skills for the 21st century.
Critical literacy is a way of thinking about text. Since literacy is a way of comprehending and creating in a medium, I would extend the meaning of critical literacy to be a way of thinking about everything. I often tell the learners in my room to question everything. Many are surprised when one of them questions me and is praised! It is simple math, really. There are 19 of them and 1 of me. Now where is the brain power? Yeah, exactly.
One of the techniques for enhancing critical literacy is called "Problem Posing". Using this method, the learning leader… more3 votes -
How does a district reconcile Web collaboration beyond the school with federal/state law?
Web 2.0 and 3.0 is all about collaboration, communication, and extending the classroom beyond the physical walls and beyond the school day. With both federal and state law written to protect students when using the Internet, and with few technology tools available to districts to protect students when using the most used Web 2.0 applications, how does a district reconcile the two so that students can experience safe and authentic learning experiences?
