The topic I'd like to see represented in a keynote at ISTE 2010 is...

Equity

There is a vast disparity between the technology available to wealthy school districts and that available to others. As well, there is a big difference in how they are used. I would like a keynote speaker to address this issue, including an analysis of the issue as well as suggested solutions.

There needs to be equity when it comes to access to technologies at home and at school, but there also needs to be equity when it comes to the quality of education provided to students, no matter the demographics. The quality of teachers in given areas should also be discussed. Many schools are now including EdTech courses in certification. We need to make this translate to better learning environments for all teachers.

The call to the Dept of Ed today was very sad. Few people know that half of the US is not on broadband so it does not matter what beautiful pages are put up or wonderful ideas that are shared. Most people nod their head about DE and say its a good idea but then
get into new technologies and forget those across the digital divide, the information divide and the technology divide.

This is the secret that no one wants to hear. We have almost 6 million households without broadband connectivity. I wonder how many of our schools are without the connectivity that allows their students to access the tools that others take for granted. Would love to hear about some far-reaching ideas on how to solve this problem
