  1. Digital Citizenship with all it's ramifications for students and adults.

How do adults learn these "new" perspectives and then lead students through the various aspects without being "preachy" and instilling an internation ethic.

    • Partnerships between K-12 and Higher Education (K-20)

With dwindling resources and mounting challenges, schools must seek out mutually beneficial partnerships. Colleges, especially those with teacher ed programs, have resources that may assist partner K-12 schools. College students & faculty would benefit by having access to experiential activities and research opportunities.

      • What does it mean to be literate in the 21st century?

Learning to read books and write on paper is not enough in the 21st century. Today individuals must cultivate multiple literacies: information literacy, media literacy, visual literacy, technology literacy, and more. What are the implications of living in a world of multiple literacies and how can be best prepare people for life and learning in such a world?

        • Radical Change to Recreate the Business of Education

It's 'way beyond time we began an earnest dialog about how not to reform education, but to reinvent it. Face it: the agrarian-society-based format of our educational system(s) is simply not up to the job of facilitating even today's young (and aging) leaders and creators, much less those of the future. Let's get real and admit it, then move on and create. Throw out old jargon, current models, even models built upon current models. How can we make education something that works, not something we are constantly apologizing for and embarrassed about?

          • Empowering Peripheral Learners

Today's kids extend the reach of their brains with peripheral devices. Adults do too, just imagine how many bits of information you've outsourced to your laptop or cell phone for warehousing. How do we mentor and teach this generation of peripheral learners? Let's explore what it means to be an empowered learner today and a successful human in the future.

                • Virtual Learning: Engaging Learners Remotely While Preserving Rigor, Relevance and Critical Thought

We know Virtual Learning is here and growing - but how can it be rigorous, relevant, and promote critical thinking - and how can teachers engage learners remotely? We've figured out what quality teaching and learning looks like in the traditional classroom - what's quality look like when learners and nearly anywhere - and not even learning synchronously? Let's see it - live - let's put it on - for everyone to see and participate in and consider. Let's have a master facilitator bring it to us.

                  • Imagining Convergence Amid Cacaphony

With so many reforms, mandates, and agendas pushing and pulling on educators and students today, how do we leverage technology and our voices to find convergence in what education should look like, and how do we cultivate convergence in a web world so individual learning can grow and thrive amid the rapidly growing weeds of so many well-meaning efforts?

                    • Geo-literacy and globalization

Amidst all the talk about globalization, students in the United States are increasingly geographically illiterate. The recent emphasis on limited learning assessment measures have left social studies at the back of the curriculum line up, with geography trailing far in the distance. This takes place at a time when emerging digital technologies allow teachers and students to use geospatial information to think about the world and to make personal, professional, and civic decisions. Efforts such at the National Geographic Geo-Literacy Fund are in place to support this kind of work; it is time for an effective ISTE 2010 keynote about…

                      • It's about process, not the tool, tool.

Tools are great, Web 2.0 gets a lot of press, especially when it comes to classroom products. But it's time to talk about how teaching digitally informs the teacher's process. Let's hear the conversation about how best practices are improving with technology and the tools. I think we should hear about how engaging students (reaching in) is fundamentally better than being spoon fed. I want ISTE 2010 to be a call to arms for educators to help change the culture of teaching into one of engagement vs. rote learning. Who should we hear from to lead that change?

                        • The effect of technology on instruction, classrooms, & student learning

Consider how technology has impacted the way the modern classroom looks. Educators teach differently when technology is in their classrooms. The physical environment looks different. In light of this, as well exponentially evolving influences of technology outside of school, student learning looks like today.

                          • Does our education system measure what really matters

If we assess student achievement by measuring scores on standardized tests, is that really what we want our students to master? Moving up the scale on Bloom's Taxonomy, the higher order thinking skills are more valued in society...so why do we place such high value on tests that assess recall and understanding with some application?

                              • 17 yr. old Travis Allen speaks about his organization-The iSchool Initiative-http://www.youtube.com

Travis Allen formed the iSchool Initiative after coming to the sober realization that we can’t wait for government and school board bureaucrats to bring technology into our classrooms. This non-profit organization began with the simple idea that Apple's popular iPod Touch just might be a solution for cost effective technology in schools. After sharing his iSchool concept with Teachers, students and eventually the Principle of his high school, he realized this idea had tremendous potential to save schools money and at the same time dramatically reduce their carbon footprint on the environment.
