Welcome to the official ISTE 2010 Conference keynote topic forum.

THIS FORUM IS NOW CLOSED.

Please visit http://www.iste.org/iste2010-keynote/ to place your final vote.

The topic I'd like to see represented in a keynote at ISTE 2010 is...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Students vs. Leadership: The Great Debate

Let's combine the ideas of "leadership" and "student voice" with a debate! I envision a panel of students and a panel of administrators participating in a debate. The questions could cover many of the topics that currently sit at the top of our list. We could include all sorts of audience participation options, and truly make our keynote one-of-a-kind!

This idea would allow the needs of many to be met, while at the same time sparking all kinds of great discussions. I realize that this is not the typical keynote format, but it's ours to decide! If you are truly…

    • Cultivating a growth mindset and a focus on learning

Research shows that a growth mindset - the view of abilities as developed over time rather than innate - has immense ramifications on behavior. Students and teachers who see abilities as developed over time undertake much more learning-conducive behavior. How can we cultivate a growth mindset across, schools, districts and the community?

      • 2-4-6-8 Shouldn't we teach online instructors HOW to facilitate?

New online instructors are often trained in how to use the LMS. They are rarely, if ever, trained in the pedagogy of online facilitation. Being an SME does not directly correlate with an instructor being a good online facilitator.

        *types of training
*is an eLearning certification the answer?
*exploration of quality programs - how are they churning out quality instructors?

            • Computational Thinking

i.e. threading the teaching ABOUT computing and technology throughout the K-12 curriculum. One possible candidate for a keynote is Dr. Jeanette Wing (associate director of CISE directorate at NSF). Her talk at the NECC 2009 SIGCT breakfast forum was a brilliant and motivating talk as to how this can be done and why the future of US technological advancement depends on it.

              • The Ingenuity Gap

Thomas Homer-Dixon's book of the same title presents scenarios of what the world requires - today - in order to support the many complex systems that we've built. Do educators, politicians, parents really understand the importance of this mandate? In line with good assessment practice, can we agree on the goals of education? How can we align all of our resources towards this goal? Do we keep on teaching to the M/C tests? Do we continue to use flawed statistics to compare progress in schools? Do we finally give teachers the time to develop technology-based lessons which are so crucial…

                  • Electronic Educational Records that Work

While schools, districts, and states amass tons of data on students, much if it is not in electronic form *still*, and what is available electronically is almost incomprehensible to cross-platform searches. Ever tried to merge attendance data from an SQL table with assessment scores from your Learning Management System? It's practically impossible. Fortunately, some vendors, researchers, and tech-thinkers are starting to apply the lessons learned in business to education. Imagine what we could learn about our students if the information were actually available when and where we need it!

                    • Technology Enabling Research-Based Practices

What are the research-based accepted practices that technology can enable in the K-12 classroom? Much is written in juried and non-juried publications about accepted research-based practices for K-12 classrooms. These practices are reviewed by central office and school level leadership as continuous improvement plans are developedand deployed by classroom teachers. Technology tools such as student response systems can plan a large role in the accepted research-based practice of frequent feedback. This topic escalates the perspective in that it's not about the tool but the adopted practices our teachers strive for in their classrooms.

The pressure to achieve AYP at any cost has stripped some schools of the time and focus needed to fully engage students in technology-infused learning. Or has it?

                              • How does a district reconcile Web collaboration beyond the school with federal/state law?

Web 2.0 and 3.0 is all about collaboration, communication, and extending the classroom beyond the physical walls and beyond the school day. With both federal and state law written to protect students when using the Internet, and with few technology tools available to districts to protect students when using the most used Web 2.0 applications, how does a district reconcile the two so that students can experience safe and authentic learning experiences?

Schools are organized in top down format and we need to redesign into learning envornments based on the concept of leaderless organizations. The idea is based on Brafman's and Becstrom's book The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations

                                    • tranformational change in education

There is a need for a deep, systemic change in education if we are to meet the challenges of a information-rich, global economy. This involves more than just reforming education. Alan Bain has written about Self-Organizing Schools (2007) and has shown large effect sizes in increases on SAT scores in the schools he has worked with for this project. Michael Fullan and others would be good advocates.

                                      • Leading the Way with Digital Era Learning

Social networking technologies are transforming the very basis of how we think, and how our thinking impacts the knowledge and development of others. Yet, teacher education operates in a world of responsiveness...response to national reports, public opinion, content standards, professional standards, the media, and more. Let's flip that model on its head. Instead of reacting, educators, researchers, and policymakers can work together via social networks to proactively lead the way in transforming education in their own schools and institutions.

                                        • ICT Triage

With limited resources and huge disparities among schools, how can we focus resources on those students and those learning contexts where adding [expensive] technology can really make a significant difference in achievement?

For example, the best writers are still the best writers using ICT, but the tools don't make much difference in their writing ability, but a relative non-writer, supported by authoring circle approaches and tools like graphic organizers, video prduction and multimedia software can become an effective and enthusiastic writer and that transfers to learning gains across the curriculum.

Some students have no access outrside school whiule others have…
